Educational Benefits for Veterans

Educational benefits for military veterans and their dependents are listed below.

The Veteran and Military Services team is available if you have questions or would like more information.


Chapter 33 – Post 9/11 GI Bill

  • Provides up to 36 months of education benefits, generally payable for 15 years following your release from active duty.
    • Receive a tuition and fee payment of 40% – 100% paid directly to ºÚÁÏÍø
    • A monthly housing allowance ().
    • A books and supplies stipend of up to $1000 per year
  • Qualify if you have active duty service after September 10, 2001.
  • Transferable to spouse and dependents.

Chapter  1606 – Montgomery GI Selected Reserve  (MGIB-SR)

  • Provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
  • Receive monthly payment based on enrollment (full time, three quarter time, half time…). .

Chapter 35 – Survivor’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA)

  • Provides up to 45 months of education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition or of Veterans who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition.
  • Dependent (student) must be between the ages of 18 and 26.
  • To apply, obtain and complete , Dependents Application for VA Education Benefits.
  • Receive monthly payment based on enrollment (full time, three quarter time, half time…). .

NYS Veterans Tuition Award

  • Tuition Award for Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, or other eligible combat veterans pursuing an undergraduate, graduate degree or vocational training program.
  • Award covers cost of tuition.

NYS Regents Awards for Children of Deceased and Disabled Veterans

  • Scholarships for students whose parent served in the U.S. Armed Forces during designated periods of war or national emergencies and as a result have passed, become disabled, are missing in action, or were taken as a prisoner of war. 
  • Receive up to $450 per year.

Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive & Tribute (MERIT) Scholarship

  • Available to members of U.S. Armed Forces and their children, spouses or financial dependents who died or became severely and permanently disabled as a result of injury or illness suffered or incurred while performing their military duties, whether in combat or not; or are classified as missing in action while NYS residents.
  • Covers the cost of attendance.

ºÚÁÏÍø Benefit: Free Parking for Veterans

ºÚÁÏÍø is pleased to offer our veterans free on-campus parking. To make use of this benefit, first contact Jaime Arena (Veteran Coordinator) to be added to the list, and then simply inform the Parking & Transportation office that you are a veteran when you obtain your parking permit.
