Integrative and Applied Learning

Integrative and Applied Learning and Study Abroad

Students entering the college from Fall 2022 on must meet the Integrative and Applied Learning (IAL) graduation requirement. If you are graduating prior to Spring 2026, this requirement does not apply to you. To learn more about the IAL Requirement, please visit: /gened/integrative-and-applied-learning-requirement

Did you know? Studying abroad is one way to complete the Geneseo IAL requirement!

In order for your study abroad program to count, it should meet the outcomes below.

Students will be able to:

  • Integrate multiple bodies of knowledge with their personal experience by asking meaningful questions about real-world problems
  • Apply skills, theories, and methods gained in academic study, professional experiences, and/or co-curricular experiences to new situations
  • Reflect upon changes in their learning and outlook over time, and integrate into their future endeavors based on that self-reflection

Students may meet the Integrative and Applied Learning (IAL) requirement in one of two ways.

  • Take a course that is designed to meet the requirement and carries the IAL attribute. This includes many of our faculty-led study abroad programs. See the complete list here.

Many faculty-led study abroad/away programs/courses already meet this requirement. See below for all faculty-led programs that currently meet the requirement:

Summer 2026:

Last updated: 06/10/2025 (This list is updated as faculty-led programs are reviewed and approved for IAL).

All faculty-led study abroad/away programs can meet the IAL requirement, if the faculty-led program you are participating on does not already carry the IAL attribute, follow the steps outlined below under 鈥淧artner Study Abroad Programs鈥.

  • If you are studying abroad on a Geneseo or Other SUNY partner program or a faculty-led program that does not carry the IAL attribute, you can: design and propose an individual IAL experience in GradLeaders. Your proposal must demonstrate how you will meet the three outcomes above.

How Do I Seek Approval for my Program to Count as IAL?

Instructions for Proposal in the GradLeaders System:

1. Log into the GradLeaders system .

  • Use your full G# as your User ID and geneseo as the password. If you can鈥檛 access the system, use the system to find your email and reset your account or contact careers@geneseo.edu.

2. Click on 鈥淎dd Internship鈥 and select the IAL labeled option for the semester to begin your learning agreement (ie. Spring 2026- Integrative Learning).

3. Required fields include: a minimum of three learning objectives, completed prompts for the Integrative and Applied Learning outcomes, GPA, field supervisor contact information, and e-mail address.

  • Your 鈥渇ield supervisor鈥 will be Hope Martin (hmartin@geneseo.edu), Applied Learning Coordinator in the Career Design Center.

4. Upon your completion of the form, the staff of the Career Design Center will initiate the electronic signature process to get the experience initiated in the system.

5. Each participant in the approval process (field supervisor, etc.) is given the opportunity to review and then accept or reject the learning agreement if key components are missing. Accepted forms are automatically sent to the next participant in the process. Rejected forms are reviewed by Career Design Center and routed back to be corrected. You will be notified when the approval process is completed.

6. Throughout the semester, the GradLeaders system will notify you to complete mid-semester and final reflections on your experience, which will be reviewed by staff in the Career Design Center and serve as an opportunity for you to reflect on the impact of your experience in relation to your learning, personal development, and career readiness competencies.

With any questions on individual student-initiated experiences, please contact Hope Martin, Applied Learning Coordinator, at hmartin@geneseo.edu

Student Integrative and Applied Learning Experience Portal

The Center for Integrative Learning and the Center for Digital Learning have recently launched a new portal for IAL at Geneseo! Through this portal, students are able to share brief reflections on their IAL experiences and can explore the most common types of IAL experiences pursued by Geneseo students.
