First-Year Career Milestones – Draft a Resume
Why it matters
A resume is a living document that evolves throughout your college experience. Creating one now makes it easier to apply for internships, research opportunities, campus jobs, and leadership positions.
Instructions
- Review the Career Design Center’s and .
- Consider how you might use your resume in the future – for part-time jobs, scholarships, internships, research opportunities, leadership positions, or simply to document your experiences and accomplishments.
- Create your resume using Microsoft Word or Google Docs and the recommended template.
- Reflect on your past experiences and identify how they have helped you develop the career competencies employers value, such as communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and professionalism.
- If you would like additional support, attend an Introduction to Resumes workshop or meet with a career coach during Quick Chats to receive feedback and suggestions for improving your resume (optional).聽
First-Year Milestones Submission Instructions
- Complete the .

- Respond to the following reflection question. Please keep your response to about one paragraph, 100-200 words.
What did you learn about your experiences and strengths, and how will you continue building your resume throughout your time at Geneseo? - After your submission has been reviewed, you will receive a notification indicating one of the following:
- Approved: You have successfully completed the milestone.
- Needs Revision: Your resume requires a few updates before the milestone can be approved. Feedback will be provided to help you make the necessary revisions.
Remember: Your first resume is not a finished product. It will continue to grow and change as you gain new experiences throughout college. The goal is to start telling your story, not to create a “perfect” resume.
