Generative AI like ChatGPT can provide a solid base for your career journey, but you must provide your own voice and ideas to further evaluate your personal brand. The more specific you are to ChatGPT, the better the outcomes. It can be a tool for refining your responses and providing writing ideas. However, ChatGPT cannot yet completely replace your own voice. For example, it may help you receive a callback, but you must conduct the job interview. Connect with a career coach at the Career Design Center for additional support.

Exercise caution when sharing personally identifiable information with chatbots/AI. For example, if you insert your resume into the chat for feedback, do so without including your name, email address, phone number, etc.

1. Explore Careers:

Examples:

• What career should I pursue as a __________ major who is interested in ____________?
• How can I learn more about ______________ career?
• What are some ____________ industry trends?

Examples:

• Copy and paste a job description along with your resume and/or cover letter into ChatGPT and ask:

  • What hasn’t been adequately addressed in my resume and cover letter.
  • Write resume bullet points for a (position) at (company). For example, write resume bullet points for a barista at Starbucks.
  • Improve the following resume bullet point. For example, improve the following bullet point: responsible for front desk activities.
  • Review my resume like an expert coach and let me know five specific changes I can make based on this job description. (insert job description)
  • Are there specific buzzwords I should include in my resume to enhance my resume for applicant tracking systems (ATS) for this job? (insert job description)
  • Write resume achievements with metrics based on this responsibility (include a specific responsibility).

  3. Interview Preparation:

  Practice interview questions to improve your responses and build confidence. Request tips on how to tackle common interview challenges, such as explaining employment gaps or addressing weaknesses.

Examples:
