Mathematics of Computer Science

Why study the mathematics of computer science at Geneseo?

This minor uses math as a framework for understanding computing. It provides students with powerful intellectual tools for solving challenging problems and skills to transform those solutions into practical computer programs. Students will use mathematics to model and understand problems and solutions, and use computing to put solutions into practice.

The program positions students to investigate and apply computational methods in their chosen field of study. It is particularly suitable for those who want to work at the boundary of mathematics and computing or for those pursuing graduate studies in computer or computational science.

Interested in a law career? Geneseo also offers its own pre-law advisory program, which is separate from the UB 3+3 program.

Pre-Law Advisory Program

Admission Requirements

For high school students: Core GPA of 93 or higher.
For current Geneseo students: GPA of 3.0 or higher and a meeting with the pre-law advisor to assess 3+3 program eligibility.

Law 3+3

Why study pre-law at Geneseo?

The 3+3 BA/JD program with the University at Buffalo School of Law encourages students to accelerate their course of study by completing their Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor in just six years of full-time study, saving them one year’s worth of time and tuition.

Geneseo students can choose majors in American studies; economics; English; geography; history; mathematics; philosophy; philosophy, politics, and economics; or sustainability studies. After three years at Geneseo, students transfer to UB. Upon completing the first-year law school curriculum, students’ credits for the year are transferred to Geneseo to complete their bachelor’s degree.

Why study applied mathematics at Geneseo?

This major provides students with a broad foundation in mathematics and mathematical reasoning. It gives students the tools to combine mathematics with another quantitatively rich subject area that is directly concerned with applications, such as the sciences, economics, or engineering.

The major is recommended for those students who intend to pursue a career in a field that requires advanced mathematical training, often beyond an undergraduate degree.

The department encourages student research, independent study, and participation in REU’s, undergraduate and professional conferences, internships, and external competitions.
The department offers math courses uncommon for colleges of a similar size, and it has a strong history of producing excellent mathematicians, actuaries, and math teachers.
