Handshake has been recognized as the #1 college-to-career network, helping connect students with jobs, internships, employers, and events to help launch your career. The goal is to help every student find a great job and build the foundations of a meaningful career, no matter who you are, where you’re from, or who you know.

With Handshake, you can search for jobs, specific employers, and update your profile with career-related information to stand out to recruiters.  Each employer on Handshake is vetted for authenticity by our department as each has asked permission to have exclusive access to ºÚÁÏÍø students. 

By activating and having a completed Handshake profile you:

• Increase your chance of being recruited by employers
• Have the ability to customize your job search based on a range of filters such as your major, interests, skills, job type, and desired location. Handshake will then tailor opportunities that are sent to you based on your profile and your reactions to postings.
• Can review resources via its students’ blogs and videos, receive insights on a range of employment topics and attend both in person and virtual events. 
• Can apply for Internship & Job openings directly! 

The Career Design Center relies on Handshake for their own event registration and directs employers who want to hire Geneseo students to Handshake to post their open opportunities.

First-Year Milestone Profile Completion Checklist 

Visit ‘Handshake for Students & Alumni’ on the Career Design Center page for tips and tricks on activating your profile. 

In order to have a complete profile as a First-Year student, you will need to:

• Add a professional profile picture (visit the Iris Photo Booth in the Career Design Center if you do not already have one!)
• Ensure your Education section is correct (class, graduation year, degree.)
• Have a summary completed about who you are and what your goals might be.
• Identify your top skills that are relevant to the prospective industries you are interested in. 
• Unlock your profile.

First-Year Milestones Submission Instructions

3. Respond to the following reflection question. Please keep your response to about one paragraph, 100-200 words.
   What is one action you plan to take on Handshake as a result of creating your account or exploring the platform?
4. Your submission will be reviewed, and you will receive a notification once the milestone has been approved.
