Chris ScottI'm Chris Scott, and as the College's , my role is a dual one: to oversee the undergraduate admissions process in Caius, and to lead the College's strategies for widening participation. Caius's aim in admissions is simple - to admit students of the greatest academic potential, regardless of background - and to fulfill that aim we do everything we can to ensure that those applicants from backgrounds with less history of representation at Cambridge and Caius receive guidance and support, and are aware of what Caius and Cambridge are really like - that they are places in which they will fit in and be warmly welcomed.

I came to Cambridge as an undergraduate in 2011 to study English at Trinity, where I remained for 8 years – with a brief break in Japan and Scotland – to complete an MPhil and PhD. My research focuses on the history, practice and recent fate of practical criticism, a mode of reading literature, and in particular short poetry, devised by Cambridge alumnus I. A. Richards in the 1920s. Central to Richards’s project was a desire to move the study of English away from general ‘chit-chat’ about poets and into a rigorous mode of reading which anyone could learn to practice, regardless of background. My increasing commitment to and interest in outreach developed alongside my doctoral research, and before taking up my role at Caius, I spent a year as Schools Liaison Officer and Research Associate at Clare College.
